WHAT IS CLASSIFICATION?

Classification is an assessment process, which allows us to group athletes whose disability causes similar limitations in a particular sport in order to allow for meaningful competition. Classification involves an assessment of impairments and how this affects running, throwing and jumping for athletics.

WHY SHOULD I LOOK TO GET CLASSIFIED?

Classification is not required for your child to participate in local little athletic, school sports or other athletic competitions, but having a classification can be useful in enabling a more level playing field. Classification gives officials information on what assistance may be useful for an athlete and modifications which are allowed in the competition e.g. adjusted weights for throws, guide runners for visual impairment.

Classification is required if you child should wish to compete at a national level or even go on to International competition in the future. Classification also enables participation in Multiclass competitions run at State Championships – allowing athletes with different impairments to compete against each other.

WHAT IS THE PROCESS FOR CLASSIFICATION?

In order to access Classification opportunities an Athlete must be a minimum of 8 years of age. Intellectual classification must be applied for before 18 years of age.

Different impairments have different organisations involved in the classification process.

Classification Information

Provisional classification involves providing medical documentation to the required Classification organisation.

If approved for provisional or full classification depending on the organisation involved the family will be emailed with a summary sheet that highlights the child’s class. Once a child is classified, they can compete under the multi-class system.

PHYSICAL IMPAIRMENT CLASSIFICATION NEXT STEPS:

Once eligibility for physical impairment classification is determined you will be required to attend a classification session run by Athletics Victoria. This session, conducted by a certified classifier, usually involves medical, visual and cognitive testing. It will also require a demonstration of sporting skills and possibly an observation during competition. Classification sessions are run 1-2 times a year.
